This bag is made from antique linen and hemp – the textiles, circa C19th, are extremely robust.

On the front, block-printed in black, are a partly obscured image and word. The image is that of Beulah Dye’s lost thimble. It sits above the word, ‘Romney’ – which appears to be ghost-printed. The ‘y’ of ‘Romney’ is finished with a decorative, fern-like flourish, and a small patch overlays part of the text.

On the bag’s reverse are more words, block-printed in black. They read: ‘She Did’ and ‘Rue it’ – both sit separately on tobacco-coloured patches, naively hand-stitched by the artist. The bag’s bottom panel and side panel are block-printed with the words: ‘Lost By Beulah Dye’.

The bag is lined in red and black striped Irish linen, and the story of Beulah’s lost thimble – hand-written by the artist on a piece of pale blue shot silk – is hand-sewn into the bag.

The piece has a heavy, antiqued brass zip closure.

The bag’s elegant, antique leather strap – repurposed from equestrian tack – comes with an old, decorative buckle shaped like a shield. Leatherwork was sourced, restored and expertly hand-stitched using waxed linen thread by the wonderful Caroline Strecker @ragofcolts.

Finally, for protection and to give the desired sculptural feel, the bag was gently brushed with traditional rabbit skin glue.
