This bag, with a front flap, is made from pale antique linen, grey brown antique hemp and tobacco-coloured hemp – textiles are circa C19th and extremely robust.

On the front flap, in black, is a block-printed image and text. The image shows Beulah Dye’s lost thimble, printed on a tobacco-coloured hemp patch and stitched naively by the artist. The text reads: ‘Lost By Beulah Dye’ in a spidery hand. Below is the word: ‘Romney’ – again, block-printed – and the ‘y’ has a decorative, fern-like flourish. Good contrast is provided by the pale, antique linen ground.

On the bag’s front, beneath the flap, in black, is more block-printed text and a decorative motif. The words read: ‘Marsh, 1880, She Did Rue it’. ‘Marsh, 1880’ is on pale linen, ‘She Did’ and ‘Rue it’ on two separate tobacco-coloured hemp patches. Both are hand-stitched by the artist. The motif underscores the date.

The reverse and side panels are of grey brown antique hemp, and left unprinted. All edges are hand-rolled and hand-stitched.

Lined in both C19th French linen and striped Irish linen, the bag features an internal pocket. The story of Beulah’s lost thimble, hand-written by the artist on a piece of pale blue shot silk, is hand-sewn into the bag.

The bag features a thick, adjustable, antique leather shoulder or cross-body strap – repurposed from equestrian tack – with its original, silvered buckle and housing. Leatherwork was sourced, restored and expertly hand-stitched using waxed linen thread by the wonderful Caroline Strecker @ragofcolts.

Finally, for protection and to give the desired sculptural feel, the bag was gently brushed with traditional rabbit skin glue.
